Vitamin D supplementation: Who is it for and how to do it right?

The importance of vitamin D for musculoskeletal health is well documented in the scientific literature. Concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the most commonly measured metabolite, vary widely around the world and among individuals and are influenced by many factors, including sun exposure, skin pigmentation and the use of supplements. However, the optimal level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D remains controversial and recommendations vary.

In this course, Dr Mithal discusses the current consensus on vitamin D supplementation in the management of bone health. He examines the latest guidelines, considering factors such as age and baseline vitamin D status in the individual and at the population level. Recommendations and strategies for appropriate clinical management of vitamin D intake are also discussed.

Key Learning Objectives of this course include:

  • Reviewing the definition of vitamin D deficiency and the role of vitamin D supplementation in the management of bone health.
  • Exploring the latest recommendations on vitamin D supplementation according to population and degree of deficiency.
  • Learning about appropriate use of vitamin D supplementation in clinical practice and effective monitoring of vitamin D status.
