Intervention Thresholds in Non-Communicable Diseases, including Osteoporosis

In non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, respiratory diseases, diabetes and osteoporosis, intervention thresholds are essential because they define the appropriate time to initiate treatment. In addition, they allow for the targeting of individuals at high-risk, thereby optimising the allocation and efficiency of resources.

In this lecture, Prof. Eugene McCloskey explains how intervention thresholds apply to osteoporosis and draw a parallel with other NCDs. He also emphasises the critical distinction between diagnostic criteria and intervention thresholds, highlighting why conflating the two can delay treatment and limit patient care. Participants will gain insight into how intervention decisions can be optimised across diverse populations, ensuring timely and effective management of fracture risk and other NCD outcomes in evolving clinical practice.

Key Learning Objectives of this lecture include:

  • Explaining the rationale of intervention thresholds in NCDs.
  • Understanding the distinction between diagnostic criteria and intervention thresholds in NCDs, particularly osteoporosis.
  • Identifying strategies to improve timely intervention and optimise patient outcomes across diverse populations and healthcare settings
