Management of fragility fractures and falls in the oldest people

Fractures and falls in older individuals are common and can have devastating consequences. Hip fractures are significantly related to increased mortality and morbidity, carrying up to a 1-year mortality rate of up to 30% in older people. The incidence of hip fractures increases with age, even doubling with every decade of life after 50. Notably, falls account for over 80% of all fractures in the oldest adults.

In this course, Professor Lorentzon will discuss the latest insights about fractures and falls in the oldest individuals, emphasizing the role of physical function and effective preventions in this population. He will review the most recent data and strategies for clinical management of fractures and falls. Recommendations for the clinician to screen the oldest individuals at higher risk of fragility fractures and falls will also be reviewed.
