Sedentary behaviour, physical activity and bone health

Physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) are two key lifestyle factors with profound implications for bone health throughout life. Despite the well-documented benefits of physical activity for bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture prevention, emerging evidence highlights that prolonged sedentary time may have detrimental effects, independent of overall physical activity levels.

In this lecture, Professor Şansın Tüzün presents current knowledge on the impact of physical activity and sedentary behaviour on bone health outcomes. She examines their effects on BMD and fracture risk across different life stages, including children, adolescents, adults, and older populations. Drawing on a selection of studies, the lecture will explore how movement behaviours are associated with key bone health indicators throughout life.

Key Learning Objectives of this lecture include:

  • Understanding the relationship between physical activity and sedentary behaviour as well as their impact on BMD and fracture risk
  • Examining how movement-related behaviours influence bone health across different life stages
  • Reviewing key literature on the associations between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and bone health outcomes
  • Identifying practical strategies for promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviour to support bone health
